Brunswick). Professor Patterson is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the
State University of New York (Buffalo), where he earned his bachelor's degree magna cum laude in 1976, his master's
degree in 1978, and both his Ph.D. in philosophy and J.D. degrees in 1980.
Professor Patterson is a cofounder and codirector of the Rutgers–Camden
Institute for Law and Philosophy. His scholarly interests are in the fields of
commercial law, trade law, and legal philosophy. Professor Patterson has been
awarded senior research grants from the Fulbright Commission, Humboldt
Stiftung, and the American Council of Learned Societies. He was the 2005 holder
of the Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Law at The University of Trento, Italy. He is
the author of numerous books and articles in both commercial law and legal
philosophy. In 2008,
Cambridge University Press published his book The New Global Trading Order: The Evolving State and The Future of
Trade, coauthored with Professor Ari Afilalo. Professor Patterson has been a visiting professor
at the universities of Berlin, Vienna, Texas, and Georgetown. He currently holds the Chair in Legal Theory and Legal Philosophy at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy.
