Rayman L. Solomon


Dean and Professor of Law. Dean Solomon earned his B.A. in American history at Wesleyan University in 1968 and his M.A. in history at the University of Chicago in 1972. In 1976, he earned his J.D. at the University of Chicago, where he also was awarded his Ph.D. in history in 1986. After graduation from law school, Dean Solomon was a law clerk for Chief Judge George Edwards of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. He subsequently joined the American Bar Foundation as an associate director and became editor of the American Bar Foundation Research Journal. Dean Solomon began his teaching career in 1978 at the University of Chicago Law School. He is author of The History of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, 1891-1941, as well as several articles that have appeared in such books as The Oxford Companion to the Supreme Court of the United States. He is coeditor of a book on the transformations of the American legal profession, to which he contributed an article on the history of professionalism. Prior to joining Rutgers School of Law–Camden in 1998, Dean Solomon served as associate dean for academic affairs and administration at the Northwestern University School of Law. He is involved actively in the American Society for Legal History and the Organization of American Historians.
