Professor Friedell earned his B.A. summa cum
laude in 1971 at Brandeis University, where he was elected to Phi Beta
Kappa. He was associate editor of the law review at the University of Michigan
Law School where he earned his J.D. magna cum laude in 1974. Admitted
to the bars in the District of Columbia and Michigan, Professor Friedell was an
associate with the law firm of Sutherland, Asbill & Brennan in Washington,
D.C., before coming to the law school. He
has chaired the Jewish Law Section and the Maritime Law Section of the American
Association of Law Schools, and has been chosen by students as the best
professor of the year. Among his
publications are a treatise and a casebook on admiralty law and more than 40 articles,
including "The Recent Transformation of Medical Liability in Jewish Law"
(forthcoming); "The 'Different Voice' in Jewish Law: Some Parallels to a
Feminist Jurisprudence" (Indiana Law Journal); and "Compensation and Reward
for Saving Life at Sea" (Michigan Law Review).
