Assistant Professor of Law. Professor Hawkins teaches courses in Employment Law and Diversity in the
Law. She is an experienced employment lawyer and diversity
professional. Professor Hawkins has spent more than 10 of the last 13 years of her legal practice focused predominantly on issues
arising at the intersection of law and diversity. As a management side
employment lawyer, Professor Hawkins has counseled and defended
employers in a wide range of legal matters, including labor relations,
employment discrimination, wage and hour compliance, and affirmative
action planning. Additionally, as a diversity practitioner, Professor
Hawkins has consulted with law firms, corporations, professional
associations, educational institutions, nonprofits, and
quasigovernmental entities on comprehensive diversity management and
diversity crisis avoidance.
Professor Hawkins serves on numerous diversity-related committees
and boards, including the board of the Philadelphia Diversity Law Group.
She has served for the past two years as co-chair of the Pennsylvania
Bar Association Commission on Women in the Profession Diversity Task
Force. Professor Hawkins is a frequent writer and sought-after speaker
on the issue of law and diversity. Previously she was the director of diversity for Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll, LLP--the first
person to hold that position. Prior to joining Ballard Spahr, she was a
senior labor and employment attorney with Holland & Knight, LLP in
Washington, D.C. where she served as co-chair of the Corporate Diversity
Counseling practice group. She is a graduate of the Georgetown
University Law Center (J.D.) and the University of Virginia (B.A.).
