01:694:214 Introduction to Molecular Biology Research (3) Basic principles and methods of research, followed by a research project: analyses of molecular clones from eukaryotic cDNA libraries. Description of research opportunities available to undergraduates at the university. Prerequisites: For first-year students only who have placed out of General Biology (01:119:115,116, and 117) with AP credits, and 01:160:161 or 01:160:163. Corequisite: 01:160:162 or 164.
01:694:215 Honors Introduction to Molecular Biology and Biochemistry Research (4) Basic principles and methods of research, followed by a research project: isolation and analyses of transcriptional regulatory mutants in yeast. Description of research opportunities that are available to undergraduates at the university.
Prerequisite: Limited only to first-year SAS Honors Program or Honors College students who have placed out of General Biology (01:119:115,116, and 117) with AP credits. Corequisites: 01:160:161 or 01:160:163 (or AP credits) and 01:640:135 or 01:640:151 (or AP credits).
01:694:230 Analytical Methods in Biology (3) Mathematical methods and tools to analyze and interpret biological and biomedical data, including probability theory; Bayes Theorem; the binomial, Poisson, and normal distributions; limit theorems; error analysis; tests of statistical significance; parameter estimation; curve fitting; sampling techniques; random number generation; and Monte Carlo methods. Analysis of sequencing and microarray data, such as sequence alignment, phylogeny inference, population structure, selection, and human migration. Prerequisites: 01:119:115-116 and 01:640:135 or 151.
01:694:281,282 Sophomore Laboratory Research (1-6,1-6) Research project in the laboratory of a faculty member. Written report of research carried out during each semester required. Credits in this course cannot be used toward the required research credits for laboratory option.
01:694:283 Undergraduate Laboratory Research (1-6) Independent research project in the laboratory of a faculty member. A written report of research carried out during each semester required by the end of each semester. Prerequisite: Students must complete a special permission form and have it signed by their research and MBB faculty mentors before they can register of the course.
01:694:301 Introductory Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (3) Chemistry and metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids, and other biologically important compounds.  Prerequisite: 01:160:209 or 307. Not for students majoring in molecular biology and biochemistry. Credit not given for both this course and 01:694:407, 11:115:301, or 11:115:403.
01:694:313 Introductory Biochemistry Laboratory (1)
Techniques used in research, clinical, and food laboratories, including tests of biological materials, methods of separation, and determination of enzyme activities.
Lab. 3 hrs. Pre- or corequisite: 01:694:301. Not for students majoring in molecular biology and biochemistry.
01:694:315 Introduction to Molecular Biology and Biochemistry Research (3) Basic principles and methods of research, followed by a research project: analyses of molecular clones from eukaryotic cDNA libraries. Description of research opportunities at the university available to undergraduates.  Pre- or corequisites: 01:119:115,116, and 117; and 01:160:161-162, 171 or 01:160:163-164, 171. Credit not given for both this course and 01:447:315, 01:694:214, 215, or 316. Open only to MBB majors.
01:694:316 Honors Introduction to Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics Research (4) Basic principles and methods of research in molecular biology, biochemistry, and genetics, followed by a research project: isolation and analyses of transcriptional regulatory mutants in yeast. Description of research opportunities that are available to undergraduates at the university. Prerequisites: 01:119:116 and (01:160:162 or 01:160:164). For MBB or genetics majors only or those planning on being MBB or genetics majors. Special permission required.
01:694:381,382 Undergraduate Laboratory Research (3-6,3-6) Research project in the laboratory of a faculty member. Written report of research carried out during each semester required.
01:694:383 Molecular Biology and Biochemistry Seminar: Careers in Science (1) Discussion of career options in the life sciences, finding a research laboratory, performing literature searches, reading a scientific paper, and creating posters and abstracts. This course should be taken in the beginning of the third year. Open to MBB majors only.
01:694:384 Undergraduate Laboratory Research (1-6) Independent research project in the laboratory of a faculty member. A written report of research carried out during each semester required by the end of each semester. For rising juniors. Prerequisite: Students must complete a special permission form and have it signed by their research and MBB faculty mentors before they can register of the course.
01:694:385 MBB Research and Writing (3) Research project in the laboratory of a faculty member. Seminar on science communication. Written and oral reports of research carried out during the semester required. Prerequisites: MBB majors only. Students need a GPA of 2.8 or better to enroll in research.     
01:694:407 Biochemistry (3) Protein structure and function, structure of lipids, membranes and carbohydrates, catalysis of biochemical reactions, intermediary metabolism, oxidative phosphorylation, membrane transport, lipid metabolism, signal transduction, photosynthesis, protein secretion, targeting and turnover, nitrogen, amino acid, and nucleotide metabolism.
Pre- or corequisites: 01:160:307-308 or 315-316. Credit not given for both 01:694:407 and 01:694:301, 11:115:301, or 11:115:403.
01:694:408 Molecular Biology and Biochemistry (3) Disciplines of biochemistry and molecular biology as interlocking and mutually complementary fields of study. Lectures on structure of DNA, RNA, recombinant DNA approaches, DNA replication, repair and recombination, mobile genetic elements, transcription, gene regulation, RNA splicing, translation, and viral gene expression. Pre- or corequisites: 01:694:407 (preferred), or 01:694:301, or 11:115:403. Credit not given for both 01:694:408 and 01:146:478 or 11:126:481.
01:694:411 Molecular Pathways and Signal Transduction (3) Lectures and discussion of current research areas of advanced molecular and structural biology: transcription, posttranscriptional regulation, cell cycle, neurobiology, protein folding, macromolecular recognition, and molecular virology. Prerequisites: 01:694:407 and 408, or 01:447:384-385 or 11:115:403-404 or 11:126:481.
01:694:412 Proteomics and Functional Genomics (3) Survey of modern techniques of protein biochemistry, bioinformatics, proteomics, and functional genomics, including basic concepts of protein structure and function, protein folding, protein characterization and purification, enzyme kinetics, NMR and X-ray crystallography, mass spectrometry, yeast two hybrid, and various techniques and approaches to functional and structural genomics. Prerequisites: 01:694:407 and 01:447:380 (or 01:447:384), or permission of instructor. Corequisite: 01:694:408 or permission of instructor.
01:694:413 Chromatin and Epigenomics (3) Introduction to chromatin dynamics, particularly the structural and biochemical modifications of chromatin that underlie epigenetic states and their effects on gene expression and development.
Prerequisite: 01:694:408 or 01:146:478 or 01:447:385.
01:694:420,421 Special Topics in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry (3,3) Directed reading and discussion of selected topics of special interest in molecular biology and biochemistry. Topics will vary according to semester and/or instructor. Prerequisite: 01:694:408.
01:694:481,482 Advanced Undergraduate Laboratory Research (3-6,3-6) Research project in the laboratory of a faculty member. A written report of research carried out during each semester is required. Oral presentations of student research are required in 01:694:484.
Pre- or corequisites: 01:694:214, 215 or 315, 407, 408, and 383. Students must complete a special permission form and have it signed by their research and MBB faculty mentors before they can register for the course.
01:694:484 Molecular Biology and Biochemistry Seminar: Research Presentations (1) Oral presentation of student's own research results and the research interests of the laboratory with which the student is associated. Presentation at a required poster session.
Students should take this course in the spring semester of their senior year. MBB majors only.
01:694:489,490 Literature Research in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry (1-3,1-3)
Literature research projects on a selected subject under the direction of a faculty member. A written report of research carried out during each semester is required. Oral presentations of student research are required in 01:694:484.
Prerequisites: 01:694:214, 215 or 315, 407, 408, and 383.
01:694:492 Gene Regulation in Cancer and Development (3) Molecular biology is an experimental science, and a major goal of this course is to explain not just what molecular biologists know, but how they know it. Thus, while covering selected topics in gene regulation, development, and cancer, we will emphasize the methods, experimental design, history, and deductive reasoning that has led to the current state of understanding of these topics.
Pre- or corequisites: 01:694:407, 408, or 01:447:384-385 or 11:115:403-404 or 11:126:481. 
01:694:495,496 Honors Laboratory Research (6,6) Honors research project in the laboratory of a faculty member. Students are required to attend a weekly seminar in the fall semester on how to write a thesis. Oral presentations of student research presented in 01:694:484. Honors thesis and oral presentation required. Pre- or corequisites: 01:694:214, 215 or 315, 407, 408, and 383, 484.
