The minor consists of 18 credits, of which 9 credits must be at the 300 level or above.
Students must take the core course, 01:590:101 Latin America: An Introduction. Required courses are: 3 credits in history (01:508:260 Colonial Latin America, 01:508:262 Modern Latin America, 01:508:264 Latin America and the United States, 01:508:360 The History of Brazil, 01:508:362 Mexico, 01:508:369 Gender in Latin American History, or 01:508:370 History of Cuba); 3 credits in social sciences (any two of the following: 01:070:223 Anthropology of Latin America, 01:450:336 Latin America, 01:790:312 Change in Latin America; and 01:595:298 Latinos and Migration OR 01:595:299 Latinos and Community); and 3 credits in Spanish-American or Brazilian literature and culture or art history.
Students must also take 6 credits of elective courses with a Latin American focus, 3 credits of which must be at the 300 level or above; electives may include courses listed above beyond those selected as required courses.
Minors must also satisfy the language proficiency requirement by completing either Spanish 01:940:215 Introduction to Hispanic Literature or 01:940:261 Introduction to the Study of Language (or above) OR Portuguese 01:810:201 Portuguese for Native Speakers or 01:810:203 Portuguese Conversation and Composition (or above). Students are encouraged to take a placement exam to determine their level of language ability.
Course selections for the minor must be approved by the program director or an adviser.
