Students in the Rutgers Business School-New Brunswick (RBS-NB) are expected to maintain the highest level of academic performance. Depending on when you entered the business school, any one of the following conditions will result in dismissal from the Rutgers Business School-New Brunswick:

Entered RBS-NB as a first year student directly from high school

• Cumulative grade-point average lower than 2.0 at the end of the first year (second semester)
• Three grades of D (1.0) or F (0.0) received in pre-business courses
• Cumulative grade-point average lower than 2.5 by May of the sophomore year (a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher is required to declare a business major)
• Not completing all six pre-business courses with a grade of C (2.0) or higher by May of the sophomore year (end of the fourth semester)
• There will be no summer session extensions, for the completion of pre-business requirements. The end of the spring semester (May) is always the firm deadline.
• Three grades of D (1.0) or F (0.0) received in business courses

***Students dismissed from the Rutgers Business School: Undergraduate-New Brunswick prior to successful (C or higher) completion of all six pre-business courses are not eligible to appeal their dismissal.***

Entered RBS-NB as an external or school-to-school transfer student still in the pre-business stage

• Cumulative grade-point average lower than 2.5 at the end of the second semester in RBS-NB
• Three grades of D (1.0) or F (0.0) received in pre-business courses
• Not completing all six pre-business courses with a grade of C (2.0) or higher by the end of the second semester (May) in RBS-NB
• There will be no summer session extensions, for the completion of pre-business requirements. The end of the spring semester (May) is always the firm deadline.
• Three grades of D (1.0) or F (0.0) received in business course

Entered RBS-NB as an external or school-to-school transfer student with a declared business major

• Cumulative grade-point average lower than 2.0 at the end of the second semester in RBS-NB
• Three grades of D (1.0) or F (0.0) received in business courses

Dismissed Students and the Transition Semester

Students dismissed from RBS-NB will be granted one transition semester. The semester immediately following the dismissal, during which they should work on improving their GPA in order to transfer to a different school, either inside or outside of Rutgers University.

During the transition semester students must either apply for a school-to-school transfer to another school at Rutgers University or transfer out of Rutgers University. Failure to apply for and secure such a transfer by the end of the transition semester will mean dismissal from Rutgers University.

Students in this transition semester will be allowed to continue their registration at RBS-NB for one semester but will not be permitted to declare a Business major or take business (school 33) courses at RBS-NB.

At the end of the transition semester, students will not be enrolled in Rutgers Business School Undergraduate-NB or at any other Rutgers University school unless they have successfully transferred to another Rutgers school.

Students are prohibited from taking a Leave of Absence during the transition semester. Doing so will forfeit the right to a transition semester and will result in immediate dismissal from both Rutgers Business School: Undergraduate New Brunswick and Rutgers University.

Any student in a transition semester who, due to financial difficulties, is deregistered from classes and fails to continue in these classes until the financial hold is rectified will not be permitted to return for another transition semester. It is the student's responsibility to continue to attend classes even if deregistration occurs. The student should work with the Student Accounting Office to clear up accounting issues and obtain permission to re-register for all lost classes once the hold is cleared.

Not attending class during a transition semester due to a financial hold forfeits the right to an additional transition semester.

The timing of a student's transition semester is not at the discretion of the student; the semester is pre-determined by the RBS Office of Undergraduate Programs.

Dismissed Appeal Process

Declared business majors dismissed from the Rutgers Business School: Undergraduate-New Brunswick may petition the Academic Standing Committee for reconsideration of the dismissal if there are extenuating circumstances that account for their poor academic performance. You are not a declared business major if you still have any pre-business courses on your schedule during the term that you are dismissed.

While the acceptance of an appeal is not guaranteed, if your appeal is accepted, you will be readmitted and placed on continued probation for the following term of enrollment and a note of academic dismissal will remain in your academic file.

The appeal must be written by the student and should be comprehensive: elaborating on non-academic problems such as financial, medical, and personal hardships that affected his/her performance during the term. Presenting false or intentionally misleading information in the appeal may result in immediate dismissal of the appeal and/or judicial charges.

Appeals that arrive after the deadline may be reviewed during the following academic standing cycle. The decision of the Academic Standing Committee is final. If reinstated, any further academic dismissal from RBS-NB is permanent and may not be appealed.

Appeal may include:

• The circumstances that negatively impacted your academic performance during the semester of the dismissal.
• What you did to address these issues or what you are doing if these circumstances are still ongoing?
• Any contact that you made with any other RBS-NB, Rutgers University, or outside office(s) to address these issues. What has changed since you contacted these offices?
• Describe an academic and personal action plan that you will implement if reinstated to RBS-NB.
• Attached documentation to verify the problem(s) you experienced.
