Art history majors are required to complete 33 credits in the department. You must receive a grade of C or better for the class to count toward the major.
Introductory Classes: Students must take two introductory courses: 01:082:105 and 01:082:106. Students may use a 4 or 5 on the AP Art History to place out of these two classes.
Upper-Level Distribution Requirements Students must take at least one upper-level courses in each of the following chronological periods:
- Prehistory to 1500
- 1500 to 1900
- 1900 to present
- Transhistorical
Students must take upper-level courses in three out of the five geographical regions:
- Africa and the Middle East
- East, South, and Southeast Asia and Pacific Islands
- Europe and Eurasia
- The Americas
- Cross-Cultural Exchange
Individual courses may be used to meet two, but no more than two, of the distribution requirements. In the course list maintained by the department, the requirements that each course can be used to meet are clearly listed. Note: 200, 300, and 400-level courses count as upper level courses for this part of the major.
Capstone Seminar: You must take 01:082: 491 or 01:082:492. These are capstone seminars for majors; the subjects vary, but in every case you will be asked to conduct original research, give an oral presentation, and write a research paper. Students are encouraged to take more than one capstone seminar. If you take more than one Capstone seminar, you may use the second one in the chronological and geographical distribution. Minors may take a capstone seminar with permission of the instructor.
