01:590:100 Themes in Latin American Studies (1.5) Introduction to the construct called Latin America: geography, peoples and groups, cultures, history, languages, music, art, and literature. Focus may vary, according to instructor interest.
01:590:101 Latin America: An Introduction (3) Survey of Latin American culture and society from the precolonial era to the present day. Topics include culture, politics, literature, language, social inequality, and related issues.
01:590:150 The Latin American Woman (3) Analysis of women's roles within the family structure in Latin America and the Caribbean.  Examines the double standards imposed on men and women, the impact of socialization, and the development of a critical consciousness. Credit not given for both this course and 01:988:150.
01:590:201 Introduction to Latin American Civilization and Culture (3) Survey of Latin American culture from the colonial period to the present day. Consideration of chronicles of the Indies, documents on independence and nation formation, and canonical texts of modern literature and thought.
01:590:250 Sports in Latin America and the Caribbean (3) Analysis of contexts and evolution of sports and games in Latin American and Caribbean cultures.  Topics may include Maya ballgame, capoeira, soccer fever, baseball, women in sports, and sport management.

01:590:265 Afro-Brazilian History (3) Overview of the history of the largest African diaspora community in the world. Encourages critical analysis of major issues in African-Atlantic diaspora studies. Principal scholarship supplemented with selected readings in literature, oral history, African-Brazilian movement documents, and iconography. Credit not given for both this course and 01:014:265, 01:014:410, 01:508:265, or 01:590:410.
01:590:298 Latinos and Migration (3) Historical and contemporary experience of Latinos and Latin Americans with migration to/from the United States and migration within the United States. Development of regional, national, and transnational practices. Emphasis on causes and experience of migration. Credit not given for both this course and 01:050:295 or 01:595:298.
01:590:299 Topics in Latin American Studies (3) Analysis of topics in the culture and society of Latin America.
01:590:330 Religion in Latin America (3) Exploration of the religious complexity of Latin America, including Christianity, indigenous and syncretic practices, and traditions. Credit not given for both this course and 01:840:330.
01:590:367 The Afro-Latin American Experience (3) Examines profound impact of African diaspora on Latin American societies where persons of African descent represent significant minorities and numerical majorities. Explores how Afro-Latin Americans remember the past and experience the present. Credit not given for both this course and 01:508:367.
01:590:393 Modern Latin American Art (3) Latin American art from post-independence era to the second half of the 20th century. Credit not given for both this course and 01:082:393.
01:590:399 Topics in Latin American Studies (3) Analysis of select topics in the culture and society of Latin America.
01:590:401,402 Seminar in Latin American Studies (3,3) Correlation of studies through analysis of particular problems or periods in Latin American civilization. Reading, reports, and discussions. Credit not given for both these courses and 01:940:403,404.
01:590:460 Race, Class, and Ethnicity in Latin America (3) Investigation of racio-ethnic conflicts and racial formation and renegotiation in Latin America through literary and nonliterary sources. Consideration of class, racism, miscegenation, marginalization, and ethnonym. Prerequisite: One semester of 01:940:300-level Spanish literature or permission of department. Credit not given for both this course and 01:940:460.
01:590:493 Internship in Latin American Studies (1-3) Professional, supervised work in an approved organization or agency; an appropriately designed academic project required.
Open only to juniors and seniors.
01:590:496 Independent Study (1-3) Independent study in the field of Latin American studies. Topic must not be already treated in a regularly offered course. Prerequisites: Permission of program director and instructor. Open only to juniors and seniors.
01:590:497,498 Honors in Latin American Studies (BA,BA) Preparation for comprehensive examination in Latin American studies and research paper prepared under direction of honors committee. Prerequisites: 01:940:394 or equivalent, and permission of Latin American Studies Program Committee. Open only to seniors.
01:590:499 Readings in Latin American Studies (3) Independent readings under faculty supervision. Project must be one not already treated in a formal course. Prerequisites: Permission of Latin American Studies Program Committee and instructor. May not be taken for more than one semester.
