The Department of Italian is committed to the research and
teaching of Italian language, literature, and culture from all periods--from
Dante to opera, theater, and contemporary film. With seven full-time faculty
members, the department is home to award-winning researchers, a thriving
graduate program (M.A., M.A.T., and Ph.D.), and an incredibly rich undergraduate
program, where students choose from a range of courses on Italian literature, culture,
and gastronomy; world-class cities like Venice, Naples, and Rome; business
Italian for careers in food, and fashion; the history of Italian opera;
the mafia movie genre in the United States and Italy; Italian women writers; medieval and
modern Italian poetry; and race, migration, and Italian (post)colonialism,
among others.
The undergraduate program prepares students
for a globalized world by providing them cultural immersion and fluency in a
language other than English, and solid training in the humanities through a
focus on textual analysis, critical thinking and writing, and intercultural
interpretation.The Major in Italian is comprised of two sets of courses: the first is designed to provide students linguistic proficiency; the second offers students a solid foundation in Italian cultural production across the centuries¿from Dante to opera, theater, and contemporary film.
