Each year, the Department of Germanic, Russian, and East European
Languages and Literatures provides advising and significant financial
support to students traveling to Germany to study within the summer program of
the Free University Berlin. Depending on their course selections and scheduling
preferences, students earn between 4 and 7 Rutgers credits in regular or
intensive German language classes (offered at all levels) and/or courses in
German and European culture. With prior approval of the undergraduate director
of German, these credits may be applied toward the German major or minor. The
program provides excursions and other extracurricular activities to acquaint
participants more fully with the cultural life of Germany and its largest city.
Students have the opportunity to stay in dormitories or apartments, or with
German host families.
There is no German language
prerequisite for this program; beginning German language students are welcome.
It is also possible to enroll in two English-language courses in German or European studies.
