Through its Urban Teacher Education Program (UTEP), the Department of Urban Education prepares teacher candidates to teach in racially, ethnically, economically, and linguistically diverse urban middle and high schools. While in UTEP, students major in one of the following disciplines: English, mathematics, science (biology, chemistry, geology, environmental sciences, or physics), social studies (history or political science), world language (Spanish or Portuguese), and technology education (NJIT students only). The program and course information provided is complete and accurate as of the date of publication of this catalog. Any updates as well as additional information about UTEP may be found on the website. Overview of the Urban Teacher Education Program UTEP is a 30-credit course of study that leads to a New Jersey teacher certification. Our courses are organized into four clusters. In Cluster I, you will study the foundations of education, issues in urban education, and adolescent development. You will have opportunities to understand educational technologies, research, and assessment in our Cluster II courses. In Cluster III, you will investigate curriculum design and effective pedagogical practices. Finally, in Cluster IV, you will hone in on your classroom teaching practices.
