The video production program offers a major with
specializations in either narrative fiction or documentary. All students take a
core set of requirements with subject areas that include camerawork, audio,
lighting, and digital editing as well as techniques in narrative and
documentary production. The core also covers theoretical approaches through
courses on video's historical background, analysis of television's role in
modern society, and the current convergence of moving image media with all
aspects of communication such as the internet and interactive media. Advanced
courses concentrate on the development of personal styles of video creation
through more sophisticated techniques and screenings and discussions of
contemporary aesthetic approaches to the medium. Seniors have the opportunity to
gain practical experience and entry-level professional contacts through the
internship program, which has direct access to a vast assortment of TV, film,
radio, and multimedia production companies in northern New Jersey and the New
York metropolitan region.
The video production major is offered through the Department
of Arts, Culture, and Media (ACM). ACM houses programs and/or majors in art, art history,
graphic design, journalism, music, theater, and video production. Each major includes an ACM core sequence
requirement. Taking advantage of the range of disciplines in ACM and the campus
mission to engage with its community, the core combines an integrated sequence
of classes, shaped in large part by projects drawn from the urban region
surrounding the university. The sequence consists of three classes:
Introduction to Arts, Media, and Culture, a class designated by each program
that combines interdisciplinary pedagogy with a student's major; and either
Colloquium in Arts, Culture, and Media or Seminar in Arts, Culture, and Media.
