A major in Africana studies consists of 11 semester courses (of at least 3 credits each) offered by the department; students must earn a grade of C or better in all courses counted toward the major. These 11 courses comprise four compulsory core courses and seven elective courses and must include two semester courses in one foreign language taught by the Department of Africana Studies. At least six of the courses counted toward the major must be at the 300 or 400 level. Students are encouraged to meet the language requirements early in order to have the option of pursuing more advanced levels of language training.
Study abroad is very strongly recommended for Africana studies majors. The department offers assistance in long-term curriculum planning and in securing financial aid. Students participating in one- or two-semester study abroad programs in countries of the African diaspora--including Brazil, Costa Rica, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Namibia, and South Africa--can fulfill the language requirement for the major during these programs.
Students may take courses in other disciplines that relate to their area of concentration or interest, and with departmental approval, may apply up to two of these courses toward the major.
The compulsory core courses are:
01:014:103 Introduction to Africana Studies (3)
01:014:203 or 204 The Black Experience in America (3)
01:014:233 Introduction to the Methodology of Africana Studies (3)
01:014:490 Seminar in Africana Studies (3)
