Internships and Independent Study

Internships

Upper-level human resource management (HRM) majors can apply for academic credit for an internship that applies to the elective section of the HRM major. Eligible students must have completed four HRM core classes (12 credits) with a grade-point average of 3.2 or better from within the HRM core. Internships typically carry 3 credits. Students can only apply one internship toward their HRM major and must obtain preapproval from the director of the HRM undergraduate program. Students with 3 or more existing internship credits (whether general or specific to the major) are not eligible to apply for further academic credit through the HRM department.

Independent Study

Upper-level HRM majors can apply for independent study credits provided they have completed five HRM core classes (15 credits) with a grade-point average of 3.5 or better. Independent study projects typically carry 3 credits. Additional credits require approval from the program director. Students must obtain joint approval from the program director and a faculty adviser. Typically, independent studies require a research paper approved and graded by their faculty adviser.

Full information on internships and independent study as regards the HRM program may be found on the SMLR website.
