The Translation Certificate in African, Middle Eastern, and South Asian Languages and Literatures (AMESALL) consists of 18 credits, completed with a grade of B or better in each course. The requirements for the Translation Certificate program are:
- Two courses beyond the intermediate level in any of the languages offered through AMESALL or the equivalent level as determined by placement testing;
- 01:013:203 Language and Society in Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia (3);
- 01:013:304 Introduction to Translation (3);
- 01:013:403 Translation Practicum I (3), or equivalent
403a: Arabic
403b: Hindi
403c: Swahili
403d: Persian
321: Independent Language Practicum
- 01:013:404 Translation Practicum II (3), or equivalent
404a: Arabic
404b: Hindi
404c: Swahili
404d: Persian
321: Independent Language Practicum
Credits earned in any of the above courses can also be used to fulfill the requirements of the minor or major in African, Middle Eastern, and South Asian Languages and Literatures. 01:013:203 Language in Society (3) is regularly offered in the fall semester, and 01:013:304 Introduction to Translation (3) is regularly offered in the spring semester. The language practicum courses are offered according to student interest. If you are interested in pursuing the Translation Certificate, but a practicum course if not being offered in the language of your choice, please contact one of our full-time faculty members about taking 01:013:321 Independent Language Practicum (3) to fulfill the certificate requirements.
In order to enroll in the Translation Certificate program, please contact the AMESALL department administrator, Michele Frishberg, with your name, RUID, and anticipated year of graduation (class). The Translation Certificate program is also available to nonmatriculating students (i.e., those not enrolled in a degree program).
