Regional Option
As an African, Middle Eastern, South Asian Languages and Literatures (AMESALL) major with the regional major option, you will:

demonstrate listening, speaking, writing, and reading proficiency in one of the languages taught through AMESALL at a level of advanced-low or higher according to the guidelines of the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL);
- demonstrate familiarity with a cross-section of the classical literatures of all three regions; and
- demonstrate a broad understanding of the literatures of one of the three regions.
Comparative Option
As an AMESALL major with the comparative major option, you will:
- demonstrate listening, speaking, writing, and reading proficiency in one of the languages of your chosen region of study (Africa, the Middle East, or South Asia) at a level of intermediate-low
or higher according to the guidelines of the American Council for the
Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL);

demonstrate listening, speaking, writing, and reading proficiency in a second language at a level of advanced-low
or higher according to the guidelines of the ACTFL;
- demonstrate familiarity with a cross-section of the classical literatures of all three regions; and
- demonstrate a broad understanding of the literatures of the three regions.
