Students with cumulative grade-point averages of 3.0 or better and averages of 3.4 or better in courses taken for the major are eligible to do honors work. Honors students must complete a distinguished independent essay or project in connection with enrollment in 01:050: 495, 496 in their senior year. They also must satisfactorily pass an oral examination administered by the American studies faculty, based largely on the essay or project.
