01:694:215 Honors Introduction to Molecular Biology and Biochemistry Research (3) Basic principles and methods of research, followed by a research project: analyses of molecular clones from eukaryotic cDNA libraries. Description of research opportunities at the university that are available to undergraduates.
Prerequisite: Limited only to first-year SAS honors students who have placed out of General Biology (01:119:101-102) with AP credits.
01:694:281,282 Sophomore Laboratory Research (1-6,1-6) Research project in the laboratory of a faculty member. Written report of research carried out during each semester required. Credits in this course cannot be used toward the required research credits for laboratory option.
01:694:301 Introductory Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (3) Chemistry and metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids, and other biologically important compounds.  Prerequisite: 01:160:209 or 307. Not for students majoring in molecular biology and biochemistry. Credit not given for both this course and 01:694:407, 11:115:301, or 11:115:403.
01:694:313 Introductory Biochemistry Laboratory (1)
Techniques used in research, clinical, and food laboratories, including tests of biological materials, methods of separation, and determination of enzyme activities.

01:694:315 Introduction to Molecular Biology and Biochemistry Research (3) Basic principles and methods of research, followed by a research project: analyses of molecular clones from eukaryotic cDNA libraries. 01:694:381,382 Undergraduate Laboratory Research (3-6,3-6) Research project in the laboratory of a faculty member. Written report of research carried out during each semester required.
01:694:407-408 Molecular Biology and Biochemistry (3,3) Disciplines of biochemistry and molecular biology as interlocking and mutually complementary fields of study. First semester: protein structure and function, structure of lipids, membranes and carbohydrates, catalysis of biochemical reactions, intermediary metabolism, oxidative phosphorylation, membrane transport, lipid metabolism, signal transduction, photosynthesis, protein secretion, targeting and turnover, nitrogen, amino acid, and nucleotide metabolism. Second semester: Structure of DNA, RNA, recombinant DNA approaches, DNA replication, repair and recombination, mobile genetic elements transcription, gene regulation, RNA splicing, translation, and viral gene expression. Pre- or corequisites for 01:694:407 are 01:160:307-308 or 315-316. Prerequisite for 01:694:408 is 01:694:407 (preferred), or 01:694:301, or 11:115:403. Credit not given for both 01:694:407 and 01:694:301, 11:115:301, or 11:115:403. Credit not given for both 01:694:408 and 01:146:478 or 11:126:481.
01:694:411 Molecular Pathways and Signal Transduction (3) Lectures and discussion of current research areas of advanced molecular and structural biology: transcription, posttranscriptional regulation, cell cycle, neurobiology, protein folding, macromolecular recognition, and molecular virology. Prerequisites: 01:694:407-408 or 01:447:384-385 or 11:115:403-404 or 11:126:481.
01:694:412 Proteomics and Functional Genomics (3) Survey of modern techniques of protein biochemistry, bioinformatics, proteomics, and functional genomics, including basic concepts of protein structure and function, protein folding, protein characterization and purification, enzyme kinetics, NMR and X-ray crystallography, mass spectrometry, RNAi, yeast two hybrid, and various techniques and approaches to functional and structural genomics. Prerequisites: 01:694:407 and 01:447:380 (or 01:447:384), or permission of instructor. Corequisite: 01:694:408 or permission of instructor.
01:694:413 Chromatin and Epigenomics (3) Introduction to chromatin dynamics, particularly the structural and biochemical modifications of chromatin that underlie epigenetic states and their effects on gene expression and development.
Prerequisite: 01:694:408 or 01:146:478 or 01:447:385.
01:94:420,421 Special Topics in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry (3,3) Directed reading and discussion of selected topics of special interest in molecular biology and biochemistry. Topics will vary according to semester and/or instructor. Prerequisite: 01:694:408.
01:694:481,482 Advanced Undergraduate Laboratory Research (3-6,3-6) Research project in the laboratory of a faculty member. A written report of research carried out during each semester is required. Oral presentations of student research are required in 01:694:483,484.
Pre- or corequisites: 01:694:315, 407-408, and 483,484.
01:694:483,484 Seminar in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry (1,1) Oral presentation of student's own research results and the research interests of the laboratory with which the student is associated. Discussion of career options in the fall, and a required poster session of student research in the spring.
Pre- or corequisites: 01:694:315, 381,382, and 407-408; or 01:694:481,482, 489,490, or 495,496.
01:694:489,490 Literature Research in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry (3,3)
Literature research projects on a selected subject under the direction of a faculty member. A written report of research carried out during each semester is required. Oral presentations of student research are required in 01:694:483,484.
Prerequisites: 01:694:315, 407-408, and 483,484.   
01:694:492 Gene Regulation in Cancer and Development (3) Molecular biology is an experimental science, and a major goal of this course is to explain not just what molecular biologists know, but how they know it. Thus, while covering selected topics in gene regulation, development, and cancer, we will emphasize the methods, experimental design, history, and deductive reasoning that has led to the current state of understanding of these topics.
Pre- or corequisites: 01:694:407-408 or 01:447:384-385 or 11:115:403-404 or 11:126:481. 
01:694:495,496 Honors Laboratory Research (6,6) Honors research project in the laboratory of a faculty member. Oral presentation of student research presented in 01:694:483,484. Honors thesis and oral presentation required. Pre- or corequisites: 01:694:315, 407-408, and 483,484.
