Joint B.A./M.S. Physician Assistant Program (Rutgers University-UMDNJ)

Rutgers University/University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-School of Health Related Professions Joint Bachelor of Arts/Master of Science Degree (B.A./M.S.) Physician Assistant Program

This is a six-year (3+3) program offered jointly by Rutgers University and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-School of Health Related Professions (UMDNJ). The program can be looked at as a two-phase program, an undergraduate phase followed by a professional phase. This program is open to students enrolled at the School of Arts and Sciences, Rutgers-New Brunswick, who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States. The first phase of the program includes three years of undergraduate liberal arts and basic science education. Students may apply to the second (professional) phase in April of their second year by applying to the Physician Assistant (PA) program. Personal interviews will be required of those applicants being considered for admission. The interview will serve to determine the applicant's emotional and intellectual maturity, ability to communicate, and the potential to achieve career satisfaction within the physician assistant role. Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0. In cases where individuals may show high potential by improved performance, exceptions to this requirement may be considered. Please note that acceptance by Rutgers University does not guarantee acceptance by the PA program.

All applications must be received by June 1 and final notices of acceptance will be made by August 1. If the applicant is accepted into the program, it will be contingent on maintaining a 3.0 GPA through the end of the third undergraduate year at Rutgers, and all requirements for the undergraduate degree are met before the beginning of the fourth year. Students who are accepted into the second phase of the program will begin this phase at the beginning of their senior year. At the end of the senior year, these students will receive a bachelor of arts degree conferred by Rutgers University. After completion of the remaining two years of the PA program, graduates will receive a master of science degree awarded by UMDNJ.

Before entering the second (professional) phase, a student accepted by this program with a major in biological sciences is required to have completed, in addition to the School of Arts and Sciences distribution requirements, the life sciences core requirements, and a minimum of 10 credits of life sciences electives. The life sciences elective credits must include one course in each of the 447, 694, and 11:704 subject areas. A maximum of 14 credits from among the following UMDNJ courses, each shown with its Rutgers equivalent credit value, can be accepted toward the biological sciences major: Gross Anatomy (4), Neuroanatomy (2), Cellular and Genetic Mechanisms (4), and Medical Physiology (4).

A student may not receive biological sciences credits for both UMDNJ Gross Anatomy and Rutgers Functional Human Anatomy (01:377:213) or Human Anatomy (01:377:424); UMDNJ Neuroanatomy and Rutgers Advanced Neurobiology (01:146:445, 446); UMDNJ Cellular and Genetic Mechanisms and Rutgers Advanced Cell Biology (01:146:470) or Topics in Human Genetics (01:447:481); UMDNJ Medical Physiology and Rutgers Systems Physiology (01:146:356,357). For a complete description of the requirements for the major in biological sciences, please read the appropriate section under the Division of Life Sciences in this catalog.
