Goal I. General Linguistic Ability
To offer courses that provide our students with
the linguistic skills necessary to communicate in Italian. Preliminary courses
taught in English introduce students without prior knowledge to Italian
language.
Objectives: Communicative and Intercultural
Competence
- Enable students to speak, read, comprehend, and
write in Italian.
- Provide students with access to Italian cultural
phenomena.
Expected Outcomes
- Students shall demonstrate the ability to speak
Italian with a varied vocabulary, good pronunciation, and grammatical accuracy;
to read and comprehend general nontechnical materials in Italian; to
understand Italian as spoken by a proficient speaker at a normal conversational
tempo and on general topics; to write in simple Italian with clarity and
grammatical accuracy.
- Students shall demonstrate a general acquaintance
with Italian culture as well as an understanding of appropriate cross-cultural
behaviors.

II. Cultural Proficiency
To offer courses that provide our students with
the cultural skills necessary to engage with Italian cultural phenomena.
Preliminary courses taught in English introduce students without prior
knowledge to Italian culture.
Objectives
- Enable students to communicate effectively, both in
written and in oral form, about Italian cultural topics in English and in
Italian, and to demonstrate knowledge of the richness and variety of Italian
literature throughout history and across the Italian-speaking world.
- Enable students to develop analytical and critical
skills while learning about Italian culture.
Expected Outcomes
- Students shall demonstrate the ability to
communicate effectively about Italian cultural topics, using appropriate writing
and oral conventions and formats.
- Students shall demonstrate the ability to formulate
relevant questions, evaluate arguments, evidence, and hypotheses; and finally
use the results of analysis to construct new arguments and formulate new
questions on topics concerning Italian culture.
Goal
III. Professional Preparation
To offer courses that allow students to specialize
in Italian literature and culture, and to equip with the necessary skills those
students who wish to enter post-graduate programs in Italian or in related
fields.
Objectives
- Enable students to analyze style and structures of
different literary forms, recognize periods, movements, genres, and major
authors.
- Provide students with the skills necessary to
critically analyze and interpret Italian literary and cultural products and to
formulate appropriate arguments and new questions about them in Italian.
Expected Outcomes
- Students shall demonstrate the ability to
critically analyze and interpret Italian literary and cultural products and to
formulate appropriate arguments and new questions about them in Italian.
- They shall demonstrate the ability to identify
periods, movements, genres, and major authors and to relate them to their
historical and societal context.
