Curatorial Studies

The curatorial studies certificate is taken in conjunction with the master of arts (M.A.) or doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in art history. Graduate students enrolled in this program gain valuable experience in the study of original works of art. In addition to an introductory course taught by a museum curator, which includes curatorial practices, exhibition design, and conservation, students enroll in an Exhibition Seminar. Taught by members of the faculty with curators in New York museums, the Exhibition Seminar leads to an exhibition, and provides publishing opportunities for students engaged in research on specific objects. Internships are available at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Frick Museum, the Morgan Library, and the New-York Historical Society, among others. The certificate in curatorial studies has been highly successful in placing students in positions at university galleries and art museums in locations around the country.
