James Walkup

James Walkup has postdoctoral clinical training in inpatient psychiatry and research training in the organization and financing of care for people with severe mental illness. His clinical interests include schizophrenia, bipolar illness, recurrent depression, and severe personality disorder. In his research, he is particularly concerned with nonpsychiatric needs of people with psychiatric symptoms, such as health care, work opportunities, family ties, friendships, and participation in communities. Dr. Walkup's current empirical research projects focus on the stigma associated with mental illness and the provision of care for people with mental illness and HIV. He is also conducting archival research on mental health practices in grassroots AIDS organizations in the early 1980s. He served as department chair from 2014-2019 and director of clinical training from 2014-2018.
