Matthew Lee is life span-developmental addictions researcher. Much of his graduate and postdoctoral research investigated "maturing out" of problem drinking during young adulthood. As a postdoctoral trainee, he was awarded a K99/R00 Pathway to Independence grant, which facilitated extension of his research to investigate problem-drinking recovery across the entire adult life span. The grant's K99 phase investigated age differences across the life span in various potential recovery mechanisms stemming from multiple theoretical perspectives on recovery (e.g., family-role transitions [marriage and parenthood], personality maturation, alcohol-related "problem recognition" and drinking restraint, and health issues). The grant's current R00 is investigating health and problem drinking in midlife and older adulthood through reassessments of past participants from a longitudinal, multigenerational study of familial alcohol use disorder.
