Timothy J. Cleary



Ph.D., CUNY Graduate School and University Center

Timothy J. Cleary is full professor in the Department of School Psychology within the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology (GSAPP) at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. His primary research interests include the development and application of self-regulated learning (SRL) and motivation assessment and intervention practices across academic, athletic, medical, and clinical contexts. Dr. Cleary has published approximately 60 peer-review journal articles and book chapters, two edited books addressing SRL practices, and has authored an SRL research-to-practice book for K-12 teachers. Throughout his career, Dr. Cleary has received extensive extramural grant funding as PI and co-PI from prestigious organizations (National Science Foundation, Department of Education, Spencer Foundation), with the total funding approaching $13 million. Dr. Cleary teaches courses in learning theory and academic interventions, learning disabilities, and statistics. He frequently consults with school districts regarding the provision of optimal motivational and SRL interventions and routinely conducts professional development trainings for teachers and psychologists throughout the country.
