Karen Riggs-Skean is an associate teaching professor in both the Departments of Clinical Psychology and Applied Psychology at the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology (GSAPP). She received her Psy.D. from GSAPP, after earning a B.A. in philosophy from Colorado College, an M.A. in philosophy from Yale University, and an M.Ed. in counseling psychology from Boston University. She has taught graduate courses in the Psy.D. program for over 25 years, including courses in psychodynamic theory and therapy, ethics, supervision, basic clinical skills, and short-term dynamic psychotherapy. Another major interest of Dr. Skean is couple therapy, and she has received postgraduate training in several of the major models in the couples therapy field. She is codirector of the Couples Clinic, a specialty clinic of the Psychological Clinic, where students are trained in couple therapy while serving couples in the community. Dr. Skean has also developed and taught the two undergraduate courses offered by GSAPP, "Introduction to Clinical and School Psychology," offered since 2010, and more recently, "The Psychology of Intimate Relationships," offered since 2015. In addition to teaching and supervising students at GSAPP, she is a licensed psychologist who maintains a private practice in Highland Park, New Jersey, where she works with individuals and couples and provides clinical consultation and supervision.
