Janine Jones Smith

Assistant Dean. Dean Smith earned her B.A. in 1993 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and her J.D. in 1996 from the University of Iowa, where she was managing editor of the Iowa Law Review. She is a member of the Bars of Illinois, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Dean Smith served as Judiciary and Finance Committee Counsel to U.S. Senator Carol Moseley-Braun (D-IL) from 1996-1999, and then joined the Washington, D.C., office of Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld, LLP, as counsel in the public law and policy section from 1999-2002. Prior to joining the law school in 2005, Dean Smith served as vice president and Washington counsel for America's Second Harvest: The Nation's Food Bank Network. Her responsibilities at the law school include teaching courses in tax law and legislation, overseeing the school's academic success program, and developing its international programs, including the School of Law's exchanges with the South African Constitutional Court.
