Assistant Professor of Law. Professor Smith earned his B.A.
in English from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1993
where he was named an Edmund J. James Scholar and graduated with High
Departmental Distinction. He earned his Master of Urban Planning from
the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1995 and was
recipient of the Louis B. Wetmore Fellowship for academic excellence
and the Karl B. Lohmann Award for professional promise. He earned
his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 2002 where he was an editor for the
Harvard Civil Rights-Civil Liberties Law Review and recipient of
the Dean's Award for Community Service. Prior to joining the School of
Law-Camden faculty, Professor Smith practiced real estate and land use
law in Washington, D.C., with Arnold & Porter, LLP; worked as an
urban planner in East St. Louis, Illinois; and taught courses in local
economic development and urban planning. Professor Smith teaches local
government and property law and has been named a 2005-2006 Faculty
Fellow by the Walter Rand Institute for Public Affairs. His research
interests include eminent domain and urban redevelopment efforts. He is
a member of the Bars of Maryland and the District of Columbia.
