The undergraduate music program offers a major and minor in music. In addition, courses and performance opportunities are available to all Rutgers students in all types of music. Our faculty includes internationally recognized artists and scholars in classical and jazz music. The music offerings are designed to foster a broad view of music encompassing traditions from around the world. Students have frequent contact with faculty advisers, who aid in planning work and defining goals.
Courses include music appreciation, fundamentals of music (how to read and notate music), the history of classical music, Beethoven, Bach, jazz appreciation, popular and non-Western music, as well as a range of seminars about music, identity, and the arts as a whole. 110 Warren is equipped with practice rooms and pianos, an organ, a recital hall, and a collection of instruments that students may use in the building during ensembles. Rutgers students earn academic credits by singing in the chorus. The Rutgers University Chorus, made up of students from Rutgers University-Newark, performs regularly throughout northern New Jersey and has made many concert tours in Europe and Great Britain.
The music major is offered through the Department of Arts, Culture, and Media (ACM). ACM houses programs and/or majors in art, art history, graphic design, journalism, music, and video production. Each major includes an ACM core sequence requirement. Taking advantage of the range of disciplines in ACM and the campus mission to engage with its community, the core combines an integrated sequence of classes, shaped in large part by projects drawn from the urban region surrounding the university. The sequence consists of three classes: Introduction to Arts, Media, and Culture, a class designated by each program that combines interdisciplinary pedagogy with a student's major, and either Colloquium in Arts, Culture, and Media or
Seminar in Arts, Culture, and Media.
