Clinical Professor of Law and Director, Special Education Clinic. Professor Canty-Barnes earned her B.A. from Bennett College and her J.D. from Rutgers-Newark in 1981. She represents indigent parents and caregivers of disabled children, teaches law students in this specialized area of the law, and provides educational programs for parents/caregivers, attorneys, court personnel, and others responsible for the welfare of disabled children.
Professor Canty-Barnes has been the recipient of several awards for her work from the Association of American Law Schools' Section on Clinical Legal Education, the National Association of Women Judges, the Association of Black Women Lawyers of New Jersey, and the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Education in Washington, D.C. She is a former presiding municipal court judge for the Township of Irvington, Deputy Public Defender, and unit director of Camden Regional Legal Services of New Jersey.
