Plant
biosecurity is defined as the safeguarding of U.S. agriculture and
natural resources from the introduction, establishment, and spread of
plant pests and noxious weeds. The Plant Biosecurity Certificate
Program in SEBS/Rutgers is designed to train students to understand the
biology of plant pests, to be proficient in risk analysis of plant
quarantine pests, to be able to identify pests using available
technologies, to learn the science of pest management, and to enter the
workforce of USDA-APHIS-PPQ (United States Department of
Agriculture-Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service-Plant Protection
and Quarantine) and DHS-CBP (Department of Homeland Security-Customs
and Border Patrol). The internship with USDA-APHIS will provide
students with real-world work experience and opportunity to fast-track
career employment. (Students must pass appropriate background checks
for placement in the USDA-APHIS internship.)
