Since, 1971, Rutgers has offered a program of junior-year studies at
the University of Florence, Italy. Competence in oral and written
Italian is required. Under the guidance of a Rutgers University
resident director, students attend a preliminary six-week intensive
language and culture session. Following that, they attend courses at
the University of Florence. Students also are able to spend the spring
term in Florence as part of the Rutgers Study Abroad Program. (See
