The master of landscape architecture (M.L.A.) program includes two
tracks: M.L.A. 1 and M.L.A. 2.
M.L.A. 1 is a first
professional degree, serving students who have discovered an interest in
landscape architecture after acquiring a bachelor's degree in another
field. M.L.A. 1 requires a year of
preparatory courses followed by 48 additional credits, usually completed within
a three-year period. The
curriculum provides students with a broad background in the history, theory, and
practice of landscape architecture, including its base of knowledge from the
arts and natural sciences. It is a
rigorous studio-centered curriculum, investigating the full range of landscape
problems, from garden to region, characteristic of landscape architecture
practice.
M.L.A. 2 is a
post-professional degree, serving students who have completed an undergraduate
degree in landscape architecture or a closely related field, and who wish to
pursue advanced professional study. It requires 48 credits which may come from a broad range of studios and courses; however, students enrolled in M.L.A. 2 are
encouraged to pursue special interests which coincide with faculty expertise
and our unique geographical position in the most densely populated and
industrialized state. Currently
these critical areas include brownfields remediation, stormwater management,
historic landscape preservation, and geographic information science.
