Music Major Requirements (minimum 48 credits)

B.A. with Major in Music
Students who are candidates for the bachelor of arts (B.A.) degree in the music program must satisfactorily complete music core requirements in addition to an area of concentration following a pathway in theories and histories, composition and music technology, or music education. Admission to the music program requires proficiency in basic musicianship and theory skills. Candidates who do not meet entrance standards in one or more areas will be required to take appropriate remedial courses and demonstrate competency in order to continue.

All students majoring in music must specify a primary instrument and satisfy performance requirements on that instrument. Students wishing to declare performance as their concentration must formally audition for acceptance to the performance track. Upon admittance to the school, incoming first-year and transfer student music majors should contact the music program director for information on placement exam and audition dates. Students majoring in music must earn a grade of C or better in the following courses:

Music Education:

The concentration in Music Education prepares students to teach through an integrated sequence of music and academic courses, development of music skills. Coursework in applied music, conducting, theory, history, keyboard, instrumental and vocal pedagogy, and music education form a comprehensive program that emphasizes musicianship, interpersonal skills and teaching proficiency.
The pillars of the Master of Arts in Teaching are solid knowledge of a discipline and practical experience. The program seeks to develop teachers who are:
As scholarship and performance are not mutually exclusive, all music majors are required to declare and study a major instrument, and perform two jury reviews every year. Students are encouraged to take part in the diverse performance opportunities available to enrich their understanding of the music they are studying.
The program seeks to develop teachers who are:

1. competent, caring, reflective, and qualified educators;
2. well prepared in their subject knowledge;
3. able to implement "best teaching practices" in their instruction;
4. proficient readers, writers, listeners, and able to model expertise in these fundamental aspects of educational practice;
5.knowledgeable about the impact of technology on education and how to use technology in an effective manner; and
6. well-grounded in the appreciation of diversity and global cultures
