A student must have a grade-point average in English of 3.25 or better to pursue independent study and may enroll in only one independent study course per semester. The student should discuss the contemplated project with, and secure the approval of, the instructor under whom the student wishes to work. A one-page proposal with bibliography (of approximately 10 sources) should be written by the student and approved by his or her adviser. The adviser should forward the proposal to both the undergraduate director and department chair before the end of the semester prior to that in which such study is to be undertaken. The student must be a junior or senior.
A student who wishes to earn credit for experience in a volunteer or professional setting may enroll in Internship in English (50:350:497,498). Academic credit for an internship requires prior approval by the curriculum committee, an on-site commitment of at least 100 hours, and formal supervision, either by a faculty member in the Department of English or by the campus Career Center. In the former case, the English faculty member supervises the internship in consultation with an on-site supervisor and assigns a grade. In the latter, the student participates fully in the standard internship course offered by the Career Center. English majors may count only one internship toward the major.
