(2024: Please change the title of this subsection to "Accelerated Degree/Dual-Degree Master's Programs")
Undergraduate students at Rutgers-Camden pursuing their bachelor's degrees may be interested in accelerated degree/dual-degree master's program options. These are referred to as such as they allow students to take courses that apply both to their bachelor's degree and their master's degree, later on. Further details are outlined below.
Timeline and Eligibility
Students interested in the accelerated degree/dual-degree programs are usually students with a deep passion for the area of interest/major, meaning that they are ready to commit to their major at the graduate level, as well. In these scenarios, these students are in good academic standing at the undergraduate level and possess a strong academic track record in general, indicating an ability to operate as a student with an increased workload and advanced level of study.
Students who identify an accelerated degree program of choice -- usually in line with their major -- are encouraged to speak with the graduate program director early, or to bring up this option with their advisor. The graduate program director, upon review, can admit the student into the accelerated degree program and recommend courses to take -- as well as approve them for "G-Prefix" credit, meaning that they will officially apply to both a bachelor's degree and a master's degree on the student transcript.
In their junior or senior year, students take these graduate-level courses for a G-Prefix. Students are encouraged to balance out this workload appropriately -- e.g., to not take two graduate-level courses in the same semester, or to not take graduate-level courses alongside a very busy workload.
Process for Admittance
Upon meeting with the graduate program director, undergraduate students can begin taking G-Prefix courses. However, when they are ready to graduate and transition into graduate school, they must also formally apply. Robust scholarships and supports offered by the Graduate School-Camden ensure that undergraduates here feel welcomed as applicants. Then, once admitted, these accelerated degree students formally transition into being master's students exclusively. This is pending the successful completion of their bachelor's degree, as well.
Criteria for Graduation Requirements
Undergraduate students who enter the accelerated degree program will have the opportunity to take up to one-third of their future master's degree requirements as an undergraduate. As a rule of thumb, all graduate students must take at least two-thirds of their credits with the Graduate School-Camden, meaning that these accelerated degree students would not be able to transfer in additional credits, for instance, or take G-Prefix credit undergraduate courses as future graduate students.
