Practicum Experience Courses

PRAC 0621 Interprofessional Education Experience (0) The Interprofessional Education (I.P.E.) activity will help M.P.H. students to better understand the roles, specialty knowledge and skills of other professionals, and how they contribute to overall public health goals. Students will be able to integrate perspectives from other sectors and/or professions to promote and advance population health through their I.P.E. activity. M.P.H. students are encouraged to complete their IPE activity during or after completing the core course, PHCO 0513 Leadership and Management Essentials for Public Health. The Rutgers School of Public Health hosts I.P.E. activities in fall and spring semesters only. Required for M.P.H. degree candidates.

PRAC 0715 MPH Applied Practice Experience (0) A required component of the master of public health (M.P.H.) degree, the M.P.H. Applied Practice Experience (A.P.E.) is a carefully planned and supervised learning experience. The A.P.E. connects the skills and knowledge acquired in the classroom with the pragmatic application of the practice of public health. The A.P.E. should provide the student with the opportunity to acquire, develop, and improve communication skills, project management skills, and problem-solving skills using public health methods, principles, and techniques. Moreover, it promotes hands-on public health practice, the exploration of career options, and generates contacts with other public health professionals. Students enrolled in PRAC 0715 Applied Practice Experience are responsible for a learning agreement (contract), two Applied Practice Experience-related deliverables, and an Applied Practice Experience rubric completed by their A.P.E. advisor. Prerequisite: PHCO 0502, PHCO 0504, concentration identified core course, approved learning agreement.

PRAC 0716 MPH Practicum Capstone (3) A required component of the master of public health (M.P.H.) degree, the M.P.H. Practicum Capstone (Integrative Learning Experience) is a carefully planned and supervised learning experience. PRAC 0716 is a one-semester practicum capstone required for select M.P.H. concentrations. Practicum Capstone is meant to be the culminating product of a student's M.P.H. coursework in which they produce a high-quality written product that demonstrates mastery of foundational and concentration-specific competencies and is appropriate to the student's professional goals. Students work with a School of Public Health faculty mentor who reviews and assesses the student's final products. Students enrolled in the Practicum Capstone are responsible for producing a high-quality written report and a poster presentation.

The one-semester Practicum Capstone (PRAC 0716) is required for students enrolled in the following MPH concentrations: Health Systems & Policy, Population Aging, Population Mental Health, Social & Behavioral Health Sciences, Social Work & Public Health, Global Public Health, LGBTQ Health, Public Health Nutrition, Urban Public Health, and Public Health Practice for Health Professionals. Prerequisite: PRAC 0715 and approved learning agreement.

PRAC 0717 MPH Practicum Capstone (1.5)

A required component of the master of public health (M.P.H.) degree, the M.P.H. Practicum Capstone (Integrative Learning Experience) is a carefully planned and supervised learning experience. PRAC 0717 is the first semester of the two-semester practicum capstone sequence (PRAC 0717 and PRAC 0718) required for select M.P.H. concentrations. Overall, practicum capstone is meant to be the culminating product of a student's M.P.H. coursework in which they produce a high-quality written product that demonstrates mastery of foundational and concentration-specific competencies and is appropriate to the student's professional goals. The two-semester Practicum Capstone sequence (PRAC 0717 and PRAC 0718) is required for students enrolled in the following MPH concentrations: Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Environmental Health Sciences, Occupational & Environmental Medicine (non-residents), and Occupational Safety & Health.

Prerequisite: PRAC 0715 and approved learning agreement.

PRAC 0718 MPH Practicum Capstone (1.5)

A required component of the master of public health (M.P.H.) degree, the M.P.H. Practicum Capstone (Integrative Learning Experience) is a carefully planned and supervised learning experience. PRAC 0718 is the secoond semester of the two-semester practicum capstone sequence (PRAC 0717 and PRAC 0718) required for select M.P.H. concentrations. Overall, practicum capstone is meant to be the culminating product of a student's M.P.H. coursework in which they produce a high-quality written product that demonstrates mastery of foundational and concentration-specific competencies and is appropriate to the student's professional goals. Students work with a School of Public Health faculty mentor who reviews and assesses the student's final products. Students enrolled in Practicum Capstone are responsible for producing a high-quality written report and a poster presentation by the end of the two-semester Practicum Capstone sequence.

Prerequisite: MPH in Environmental Health Sciences, Occupational & Environmental Medicine (non-residents) and Occupational Safety & Health students: PRAC 0717. MPH in Biostatistics students: PRAC 0717 and BIST 0551 or BIST 0610. MPH in Epidemiology students: PRAC 0717 and EPID 0657.

PRAC 0730 DrPH Applied Practice Experience (1-3) A required component of the doctor of public health (Dr.P.H.) degree, the Dr.P.H. Applied Practice Experience is a carefully planned and comprehensive learning experience in which students directly engage in advanced public health practice. The Dr.P.H. Applied Practice Experience connects the skills and knowledge acquired in the classroom with the advanced practice of public health across local communities and beyond. It provides students with the opportunity to sharpen leadership skills through the implementation of advanced-level practical experiences collaborating with practitioners. Prerequisite: UGPH 0711, UGPH 0715 and UGPH 0723. First credit completed in conjunction with UGPH 0723 Leadership and Management III: Organizations Contributing to Public Health.

DrPH 0740 DrPH Doctoral Research Project (1-9)

Students conduct a doctoral research project (dissertation), prepare a paper, and defend their doctoral research project (dissertation) to fulfill the integrative learning experience requirement of the Dr.P.H. degree program.

Prerequisite: Successfully passing the Dr.P.H. qualifying examination. Nine (9) credits are required.
