EPID 0621 Survey Research in Epidemiology (3) This course introduces students to the basics of survey research and provides them with the skills necessary to conduct their own survey research project. Students critique published surveys and conduct a class research project beginning with designing a survey instrument, collecting survey data, and using a statistical software package for data entry, data cleaning, and data analysis. collecting survey data, and using a statistical software package for data entry, data cleaning, and data analysis.  Prerequisites: PHCO 0502 and PHCO 0504.
EPID 0629 Meta-Analysis (3) This course provides an introduction to the rationale, methods, and implications for conducting a synthesis of research findings. The students receive step-by-step guidance on how to conduct and evaluate systematic reviews that may also include a meta-analysis. The course covers research databases, reference management software, pooled estimates, sources of heterogeneity and bias, and practical applications. Prerequisite: PHCO 0504 or graduate-level statistics course.
EPID 0641 GIS in Public Health (3) This course introduces students to the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for analyzing and addressing health problems. Students become conversant in how GIS can be used to map and analyze the geographical distributions of populations at risk, health outcomes, and risk factors; to explore associations between risk factors and health outcomes; and to address health problems. Students learn to use GIS software for various spatial analysis applications.
EPID 0650 Environmental and Occupational Epidemiology (3) In this intermediate-level course, students learn about the basic design of environmental and occupational epidemiology studies and become familiar with specific environmental and occupational hazards and diseases. The class considers unique epidemiological and exposure assessment methods used to study those topics. Students analyze, evaluate, summarize, and present the literature on health impacts of environmental and occupational exposures. Prerequisite: PHCO 0502.
EPID 0652 Epidemiology of Chronic Disease (3) This course reviews the epidemiology and prevention of major noninfectious diseases. The course starts with discussions of major concepts in chronic disease epidemiology, common research methods, and applications of those methods for chronic diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and respiratory conditions. Students critically evaluate current knowledge regarding the epidemiology of specific chronic diseases, including biological mechanisms, risk factors, and major studies. Prerequisites: PHCO 0502 and PHCO 0504.
EPID 0656 Intermediate Epidemiologic Research Methods (3) This course provides a foundation for the design, analysis, and interpretation of epidemiologic studies, building on basic concepts introduced in an introductory-level course on epidemiology (PHCO 0502). The course focuses on theories of causation, study design, possible threats to validity and how they can be recognized and addressed, as well as a critical view of epidemiology and its role in public health. Prerequisite: PHCO 0502 minimum grade of B and PHCO 0504 minimum grade of B.
EPID 0657 Applied Methods in Epidemiologic Research (3)   This course is designed to provide students with hands-on experience in the integration of epidemiologic theories and concepts with the analysis of study data. Students are introduced to various analytic approaches and quantitative methods for investigating public health issues, with a particular focus on logistic regression models. Students work on an analysis of a publicly available dataset throughout the semester. Students develop focused research hypotheses to investigate, build analytic models, and analyze and interpret the data applying the range of methods presented in lecture using SAS software. The data analysis project culminates with a written manuscript.  Prerequisites: PHCO 0502, PHCO 0504, BIST 0535, and EPID 0656.
EPID 0672 Pharmacoepidemiology and Therapeutic Risk Management (3) This course provides an introduction to pharmacoepidemiology and therapeutic risk management, focusing on the methods used to study the use and effects of medications in populations. Key topics include risk assessment, study designs, real-world data sources, and strategies for minimizing risks. Prerequisite: PHCO 0504.
EPID 0673 Social Epidemiology (3) This course introduces students to theories, concepts, and methods for investigating the social determinants of health. This course examines social factors implicated in the development and distribution of disease and the methods used to investigate these associations. Students critically evaluate measures used in social epidemiology, discuss major debates in the field, identify strengths and weaknesses of previously published studies, and examine possible solutions targeting social factors. Prerequisites: PHCO 0502 and PHCO 0504.
EPID 0676 Intermediate Pharmacoepidemiology (3) This course covers intermediate-level concepts and methods in pharmacoepidemiology and builds upon concepts introduced in EPID0672.
