Applied Research Methods in Behavioral Science (3)
Basic course in research methods, designed to acquaint HEBS students with methods to conduct health behavior research. Major research methods and techniques will be explored. While the emphasis will be on quantitative methods, qualitative methods will be introduced. A basic understanding of statistics will be useful in this course as statistical concepts, problems, and analyses are frequently considered.

Public health aims to prevent diseases and promote health through various strategies, including behavior change. Health behaviors often are complex, and successful behavior change can be challenging. The purpose of this course is to familiarize students with the more commonly used, and scientifically supported, health behavior change theories and models that facilitate successful health promotion efforts.

study and prevention of violence in its various forms. The course will
begin with an interdisciplinary review of theories
of violence and victimization and basic concepts
of research methodology. Following
these introductory sessions, the study and prevention of violence will be examined
using the steps of the public health model as the organizing
framework.

This course enables students to apply health education and behavioral science theories and strategies to the assessment of health promotion interventions designed to reduce health disparities in racially and ethnically diverse populations. It also enables students to identify patterns of health disparities, to understand contributing factors and causes, and to develop skills in the application of health education and behavioral strategies to reducing health disparities in racially and ethnically diverse populations.

Evaluation and Research Design for Public Health Interventions (3)
This doctoral-level course provides the student with the necessary knowledge base (e.g., terminology, concepts, and procedures) for understanding and conducting behavioral health research. The research designs and procedures as well as the data analytic techniques presented are commonly employed in the social and behavioral sciences as well as in other fields of inquiry. An in-depth understanding of the material presented is requisite for both accurately interpreting the abundance of health-related literature and engaging in the conduct of behavioral health research. Class lectures and the development and oral presentation of a workable research framework are the major vehicles for achieving these objectives. A working knowledge of the material presented is essential for effective communication of research procedures, findings, and conclusions.

Intermediate Survey Methods (3)
Major methods and techniques in the use of surveys for research and evaluation are explored. Theory
is integrated into practice by conducting a survey research project on a selected topic of interest. An understanding of statistics and computers is essential in this course. Computers are used throughout the semester for various tasks, including electronic communication, formatting of instruments, data entry, and analysis.
M.P.H. students who have completed a research methods course may register for this doctoral course with permission of instructor.
