Class Attendance/Schedules and Calendar

Students are expected to attend all regularly scheduled classes. A student is permitted to make up required exercises and examinations missed as a result of justified absences when these are authenticated and presented in a timely manner. University regulations permit instructors to include attendance among the factors determining a course grade.

Starting and closing dates for each semester, scheduled holidays, and other important scheduling information can be found in the academic calendar. Class periods are generally 180 minutes in length, meeting once a week, unless otherwise specified. There will be 14 weeks of instructional activity for each course. The Thanksgiving week schedule is rearranged to allow all classes to meet 14 sessions during the semester.

Please note that some programs may follow a different course start date and end date. It is recommended that students contact their program staff for the most up-to-date information regarding important dates.

Absence Due to Religious Observance

It is the policy of the university to excuse without penalty students who are absent because of religious observances and to allow the makeup of work missed because of such absences. Examinations and special, required, out-of-class activities ordinarily will not be scheduled on those days when such students refrain from participating in secular activities. Absences for reasons of religious obligation will not be counted for reporting purposes. A student absent from an examination because of required religious observance will be given an opportunity to make up the examination without penalty.

Cancellation of Classes

It is the general policy of the university not to cancel classes because of inclement weather. However, there are instances where especially adverse and hazardous weather conditions make it impossible to travel and to conduct academic activities at the campus. Students can check https://www.rutgers.edu/status for closings. Arrangements for makeup work are announced by individual instructors.

Course Evaluations

Each trimester, students are asked to evaluate their classes using online survey forms. The process is conducted under strict standards of confidentiality. After final grades for courses have been submitted, comments and evaluation data are provided to the instructor as well as to the dean's office and to the department chairs.
