To qualify, a student must have, by the end of the junior year, a cumulative grade-point average of 3.4 or better and an average of 3.4 or better in courses credited toward the major. At that time, the student should apply formally to the department. Accepted students are expected to complete at least 6 credits of Honors Research (408-409) (out of the total of 12 research credits required for honors), resulting in a thesis, and to pass an oral examination before a faculty committee in the general field of the student's program of emphasis. If the research is done in a laboratory outside of Rutgers–New Brunswick, the examination committee must include at least one individual from the Rutgers–New Brunswick genetics faculty.
Honors students must register either for an honors course sequence in genetics or for a course sequence in a school honors program. These decisions should be discussed with an adviser. An approval form is available in the departmental office and on the departmental website. Honors students must also take the course Honors Seminar in Genetics (01:447:405) concurrently with Honors in Genetics (01:447:408).
