The department offers a major with a strong emphasis on research. The requirements of the major consist of 43 credits of life sciences core, 16 credits of genetics core, and 18 credits of independent scholarship and elective coursework. A minimum of 20 credits of coursework in the life sciences must be completed in residence.

Independent Scholarship/Elective Courses (18 credits)
Students are required to take a minimum of 6 credits of independent scholarship from the list of approved courses (see below). These 6 credits must be taken over two semesters with the same adviser. Students must also complete 6 credits of elective coursework from the list of approved courses (see below). The remaining 6 credits may be fulfilled by courses from either of the approved lists (independent scholarship or electives).

Please note that a cumulative grade-point average of 3.4, as well as a grade-point average of 3.4 in all life science courses required for the major, is a prerequisite for Honors in Genetics (447:408-409).
