All Rutgers University undergraduate students wishing to major in communication must apply to the School of Communication and Information (SC&I). The Department of Communication seeks a highly motivated and diverse student body. Admission to the communication major is competitive; meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance. Minimum requirements include a combined average of C+ in 04:189:101 and 102 or 103, with a grade of C or better in each course; a grade of C or higher in expository writing or equivalent course; and a well-written personal statement. The admissions committee seeks the following when reviewing student essays: (1) a persuasive statement of purpose; (2) an understanding of issues in communication; (3) strong written communication skills, including correct grammar and spelling; and (4) evidence that the student will contribute to the community of learners in the Department of Communication as reflected in, but not limited to, such things as extracurricular activities, community involvement, leadership skills, and work experience.
Applications are available on the school's website (http://comminfo.rutgers.edu) and are due by the close of business on October 1 for spring-semester admission, or February 15 for fall-semester admission. Students are strongly encouraged to consult the department handbook and the school's website for up-to-date information regarding admission procedures.
