A full program of intercollegiate competition is provided in 13
sports for men and 14 for women. The athletic program is conducted as
part of the educational program of the university. All students are
given equal opportunity to become members of the teams. Training for
participation in athletic competition contributes to the physical,
social, and character development of the participants. Students are
encouraged to take part in the intramural and intercollegiate programs,
according to their ability. To be eligible to participate in
intercollegiate athletics, student athletes must abide by
university and NCAA academic and nonacademic standards while they are
team members of a recognized division of intercollegiate athletics.
Each of the residential colleges has a recreational athletics program,
designed to provide an opportunity for students to participate in
competitive sports as regularly as their interest and time permit.
Competition is open to all students, and there are women's, men's, and
coeducational activities available.
A club sport program is
available in a wide variety of activities and is open to all interested
students. All clubs provide competition with other schools as well as
instruction for interested students who may be new to the sport.
While courses offered for credit are available, a great number of
noncredit recreational courses is offered at the colleges. In addition,
special events and trips help to stimulate interest in new
activities or provide a challenge for more experienced participants.
