(S) Ethical Scientific Conduct (1)
Introduction to ethical issues of scientific investigation, including
intellectual property, plagiarism, conflict of interest, human and animal
subjects, and record keeping.
Intended for Ph.D. candidates in the biomedical sciences.

(F) Fundamentals of Molecular Bioscience (6)
Foundational material necessary for graduate students to become
fluent in the language of modern molecular and cellular biology,
genetics, and biochemistry in order to engage in experimentally based
discovery. Students will establish the foundational knowledge base
on which to build critical reasoning skills and identify open
questions in molecular biosciences.
Prerequisite: Undergraduate training in biology.
|
16:695:539
(F) Experimental Methods in Molecular Biosciences (2)
Experimental methodologies underlying foundational concepts in
molecular biosciences. Through reading and discussion of a range of
primary papers, students will become familiar with essential
experimental approaches, as well as the importance of proper
controls, data interpretation, and quantitative methods to address
problems in molecular biosciences.
Prerequisite: Undergraduate training in biology.

(F,S) Essential Skills I,II (1,1)
Basic skills needed in a biological research setting. Expectations
for graduate school; managing student-adviser relationships; basic
laboratory calculations; hands-on use of tools for communicating
science; applications of basic statistics; tools for management of
the scientific literature, including database searching for relevant
papers and proper citation of references. Presentation software and
bioinformatics tools. Funding opportunities and grant writing.
Prerequisite: A solid foundation in biology.

(F,S) Progress Reports of Graduate Students in Molecular Biosciences (0, P/F)
Annual research progress report aimed at developing public
speaking and presentation skills. Students present annually to receive constructive feedback, and attend regularly to engage with their peers and offer feedback.
|
16:695:615,616
(F,S) Laboratory Rotation in Molecular and Cell Biology I,II (4, 2 or 4)
Students participate in research projects in the laboratories of selected faculty members.
|

(S) Minicourses in Molecular Biosciences (1 each)
Designed to engage students in reading, analyzing,
and discussing the literature; oral or written presentations or
projects. Topics will be method-based and/or discovery-based.
Four-week courses, taken two at a time, for a total of 6 credits.
