The doctoral program normally requires 30 credits of coursework and 42 credits of research. No foreign language is required. Ordinarily, two full research semesters in residence are required, but this requirement may be waived by petition to the program faculty. The master's with thesis degree requires 24 credits of coursework and 6 credits of research. Upon recommendation by the student's adviser and the advisory committee, the master's nonthesis degree may be awarded with the substitution of classes and an essay in the place of the thesis.
