01:420:105 French for Reading Knowledge I (3) Development of reading skills to intermediate-mid level. Readings in standard French drawn from contemporary journalism and introductory texts in the humanities and social sciences.
Not open for credit to students who have completed two or more years of secondary school French or have completed 01:420:132, 137.
01:420:106 Frenchb for Reading Knowledge II (3) Continuation of 01:420:105. Development of reading skills to intermediate-high level. Readings from more advanced texts in the humanities and social sciences, with some selections chosen for pertinence to students' research or interest.
Prerequisite: 01:420:105 or permission of department. Not open for credit to students who have completed two or more years of secondary school French or 01:420:132, 137.
01:420:160 Short Stories of France (3) Some of the most important French short stories in English translation. Close reading and historical overview. Authors include Beckett, Camus, Maupassant, Nerval, Sartre, Stendhal, and Voltaire.
01:420:230 Understanding the French Enlightenment (3) Critical examination, through major philosophical and literary works of the history, of the concepts and the values of the French Enlightenment, with particular emphasis on their relevance in past and present debates about civil society, political institutions, nature, morality, artistic creation, scientific progress, religion, and changing notions of selfhood.

01:420:243 20th Century Women Writing in French (3) Range of literature by 20th century women writers translated from the French, analyzed in relation to literary and social contexts. Credit not given for both this course and 01:988:263.
01:420:251 France in the World--the World in France (3) An exploration through architecture, cinema, music, literature, and visual arts of 21st-century France's place in the world and the rest of the world's conception of France.
01:460:260 The Theater of France (3) An introduction to important plays in the history of French theater in English translation. Approach combines close reading with discussion of historical context and staging practices.
01:420:261 Life Writing in France (3) Critical interpretation of autobiographical texts, with particular attention to the distinction of fact and fiction, and theories of subjectivity, identity, and memory. Credit not given for both this course and 01:195:262.
01:420:271 Francophilia: Literature and Sexuality in Modern France (3) Explores cultural representations of nonconforming sexualities in France from the late-19th century to the present. Approach combines writing exercises with close reading and analytical discussion of literature, theory, and film within evolving historical context.

01:420:281 French and Francophone Text(s) and Image(s) (3) Explorations of the relationship between the visual arts and landmark texts written in French during various periods from the middle ages to the present, with particular emphasis on the ways visual arts have influenced and been influenced by the literature of France and Francophone cultures.
01:420:282 Music, Culture, and Memory in the French-Speaking World (3) The place of music in French and Francophone culture, with particular attention to its role in historical events and in the way they are remembered. Credit not given for both this course and 01:195:282.
01:420:283 French Gastronomy and Global Food Culture (3) Cultural codes and socioeconomic contexts that shape the preparation and consumption of food in France and the United States. Cross-cultural interdisciplinary perspectives on contemporary issues such as technology and cultural identity, cultural heritage in a globalized world, food and migration, sustainable communities, food insecurity, food justice, and food sovereignty.
