Asian Studies Courses

01:098:101 Elementary Filipino (4) Introduction to sound, grammar, and writing system of Tagalog; practice and exercises in speaking, reading, and writing.
01:098:102 Elementary Filipino (4) Continued acquisition of conversational skills; deeper understanding of the language's grammar and syntax; broadening of vocabulary and feel for contemporary Tagalog, or Filipino. Focus on real situations and modes of interaction. Prerequisite: 01:098:101 or equivalent.
01:098:111 Elementary Vietnamese (4) Introduction to sound, grammar, and writing system of modern Vietnamese; practice and exercises in speaking, reading, and writing.
01:098:112 Elementary Vietnamese (4) Basic skills requisite for modern conversational Vietnamese. Communicative and interactive listening and speaking skills; higher register of written Vietnamese. Introduction to folktale literature with written critiques. Prerequisite: 01:098:111 or equivalent.   
01:098:151 Elementary Manchu (4) Introduction to sound, grammar, and writing system of Manchu; practice and exercises in speaking, reading, and writing.
01:098:201 Intermediate Tagalog/Culture I (3) Further practice of conversational skills learned in Elementary Filipino/Tagalog I and II; understand more completely the grammar and syntax of the language; and build a vocabulary and feel for natural, contemporary Tagalog/Filipino. Contextual lessons in Philippine history, culture, values, and literature, to be conducted progressively in Tagalog/Filipino.
Prerequisite: 01:098:101, 01:098:102, or equivalent.
01:098:202 Intermediate Tagalog/Culture II (3) Continues an understanding, and appreciation of, contemporary Tagalog/Filipino and its cultural context.  Grammatical and syntactical principles, vocabulary expansion and improvement of reading, speaking, and writing. Examination of Tagalog/Filipino as living tongue though exploration of its cultural, literary, and historical contexts.
Prerequisite: 01:098:201 or equivalent.
01:098:211 Intermediate Vietnamese I (4) Development of intermediate language skills; vocabulary building, oral proficiency, listening, and reading comprehension. Prerequisite: 01:098:112 or equivalent.
01:098:212 Intermediate Vietnamese II (4) Continued development of intermediate language skills; vocabulary building, oral proficiency, listening,and reading comprehension. Prerequisite: 098:098:211 or placement.
01:098:215 Introduction to Vietnamese Literature in Translation (3) Introduces traditional Vietnamese literature from its beginnings in the early second millennium to the advent of the French conquest in the mid-19th century.
No knowledge of Vietnamese language necessary.
01:098:235 Mongolian Literature in Translation (3) Examines the development of modern Mongolian literature since the socialist revolution of 1921 as an expression of the broader social, political, and cultural forces which have shaped Mongolia during the Soviet and post-Soviet periods.
01:098:241 East Asian Civilizations: Premodern Era (3) Introduction to traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean civilizations, including governmental institutions, educational systems, belief systems, language, literature, art, and everyday life.
01:098:242 East Asian Civilizations: Modern Era (3) Introduction to modern Chinese, Japanese, and Korean civilizations, including the impact of modernization, East-West contact, governmental institutions, belief systems, educational systems, language, literature, art, and everyday life. Credit not given for both this course and 01:098:245.
01:098:250 Global East Asia (4) Critical analysis of social, cultural, and political narratives and counter-narratives used to describe and discuss East Asia. Global and regional dynamics and interrelated issues of modernity, war, gender, and the geopolitical balance of power, shaping events of the 21st century. Credit not given for both this course and 01:098:242 or 01:098:245.
01:098:255 Heroism (4) Offers global and comparative examination of different conceptions of heroism across cultures, time, and gender. Explores cultural conditioning, ethical reasoning, and moral compass behind heroes and heroines in history and literature, from Greek epic heroes to Chinese assassin-retainers, women warriors to samurais, civil rights leaders to women's rights crusaders, and comic superheroes to modern day heroes.
01:098:262 Asian American Experience: Identity and Ethnicity (3) General introduction to history and culture of Asian America and major debates in Asian American studies. Credit not given for both this course and 01:050:245.
01:098:321 Topics in Asian Studies (3) Study of specific topics in Asian studies. Topics change per semester.
May be repeated for credit with department permission.
01:098:322 Interdisciplinary Topics in East Asia: Understanding Asian Community (3) Interdisciplinary introduction to East Asia and Asian community with critical approaches to modern literature, film, history, and culture in China, Japan, Korea, other Asian regions and beyond.
01:098:326 Immorality Suffering and Retribution in the Great Romances of East Asia (3) This course provides an introduction to vernacular narrative traditions of East Asia.
01:098:331 The Sounds of Asia: Music of the East in the Global Era (3) Introduction to musical sound, musical activities, and musicians as a means of understanding Asia. Analysis of musical genres, instruments, musicians, and associated artistic/cultural ideas that have developed historically, and are current today.
01:098:338 Religious Themes in East Asian Literature (3) Religious ideas and attitudes as expressed in Indian, Chinese, and Japanese classics. Credit not given for both this course and 01:840:338.
01:098:340 TransAsia: A Transnation History of Asia, Gender, and Sexuality (3) Transnational history of Asia; how (trans)regional movements in peoples, ideas, commodities, technologies, and capital have shaped and been shaped by gender/sexuality.
01:098:345 Asia-Pacific in Cross-Cultural Perspective (3) Explores the social, cultural, and political interactions in the Asia-Pacific region from the late nineteenth century to the present from a cross-cultural perspective.
01:098:373 Classical Tibetan (3) Introduction to the grammar and writing system of classical Tibetan, working directly with original Buddhist texts.
01:098:393 Independent Study of Asian Languages and Literatures (3) Intensive study of a specific Asian language and/or literature not covered in regularly scheduled classes.

01:098:410 The History of East Asian Writing Systems (3) General survey of writing and literacy in the East Asian countries of the Sinitic cultural sphere.
01:098:444 Seminar on East Asian Societies (3) Examines major social and cultural issues of contemporary East Asia (China, Japan, Korea) from nineteenth century to present through a variety of disciplinary perspectives such as literary approaches, visual studies, social history, women¿s and gender studies, and global studies. Provides systematic introduction to research process and equips students with necessary knowledge and skills to understand major issues in the larger context of East Asian culture and societies.

01:098:473 The Silk Road: A History of Cultural and Material Exchanges (3) An interdisciplinary introduction to the history of the Silk Road with a focus on the cultural and material exchanges between the peoples and cultures it connected over the period from 500 BCE to 1500 CE.
Credit not given for both this course and 01:165:473.
01:098:477 Gender in East Asian Religiosity (3) Examines the religious beliefs and practices of and about women in Buddhism, Confucianism, Daoism, and other religious traditions popular in China, Japan, and Korea.
