Bachelor of Arts in Labor Studies and Employment Relations


Students seeking to major in labor studies and employment relations must first be admitted to the School of Arts and Sciences. Applicants to the major must have a 2.0 grade-point average or better in their college work in order to major in this multidisciplinary course of study. 

Students may be conditionally admitted to the labor studies major by going to the SAS major/minor sign-up website: mymajor.sas.rutgers.edu and logging in with their Net ID and password. Select 578 Labor Studies and Employment Relations as your major. 

Students must take 36 credits of labor studies and employment relations courses with a grade of C or better as part of the total 120 credits required to graduate from Rutgers.

Students must meet all requirements of the School of Arts and Sciences, as well as the major requirements specified below. (See the New Brunswick Undergraduate Catalog for information on admission, financial aid, academic policies and procedures, and degree requirements of the School of Arts and Sciences.

Major Requirements for the Bachelor of Arts in Labor Studies and Employment Relations Degree

36 credits selected from classes offered by the department with a grade of C or better, including:
  • 37:575:100 or 37:575:110 (Introductory course)
  • 37:575:395 (Perspectives--a survey of theories relevant to the major)
  • At least one capstone course or internship
  • 37:575:401, 403, 450, 490, 494, 495, 496, 497, 498, or 499 
Up to 6 of these credits may consist of courses in related social science disciplines.
