B.S. in Labor and Employment Relations and B.A. in Labor Studies and Employment Relations

The Department of Labor Studies and Employment Relations offers an undergraduate degree program leading to the bachelor of science (B.S.) degree from the School of Management and Labor Relations (SMLR). It also offers an undergraduate major toward a bachelor of arts (B.A.) degree in labor studies and employment relations that is granted jointly between SMLR and the School of Arts and Sciences. Students pursuing either major examine work, the management of work, the problems of working people, and what workers have done, both individually and collectively, to address those problems. During their studies, students acquire specific competencies useful in employment and the background needed to participate in dialogues regarding work and the wider society. They have the opportunity to earn credit toward the major by working as interns. Graduates of the program are equipped to go directly into work with unions, other nonprofit organizations, federal or state agencies that deal with labor issues, and public or private employers. They also are prepared to go on to graduate school or law school.
